Former AMA Superbike and World Superbike competitor Geoff May, who raced in MotoAmerica’s Stock 1000 class last year aboard the number 99 Ameris Bank Kawasaki ZX-10R and won Saturday’s race one at Road America, will make his 2020 MotoAmerica debut at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta on July 31 through August 2.

May will race the number 54 Disrupt Racing CCFOfficeSolutions.com Kawasaki ZX-10R in both Stock 1000 and Superbike at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. Traditionally, the Georgian, who lives in Sugar Hill, less than 30 minutes from Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, has raced under the competition number 99. However, long-time fans of AMA Superbike racing will recall when May raced the number 54 National Guard Suzuki Superbike for Michael Jordan Motorsports back in 2009.

We asked May why the change from number 99 to number 54, and he said, “Well, the number 99 is registered to me, but I wasn’t sure if I was going to race in 2020, and PJ (Jacobsen) has used the same number during his career. He made a request to the AMA to use it for Stock 1000 and Superbike this year, and I didn’t.

“I’m OK running number 54, though. That number holds a lot of meaning for me. First of all, when I ran it in 2009 on the National Guard bike that I raced for Jordan Suzuki, the number represented the 50 states and 4 territories that the National Guard protects. I’m proud that I got to use that special number that season.”

Another reason that May is okay with the switch from 99 to 54 is that the number 54 was a very good one for May, especially at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta in 2009 when he finished third in both of that weekend’s Superbike races.

When asked about “Disrupt Racing,” the name of the team that May will race for at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, he said, “Jesse at Disrupt Racing is the title sponsor of my team. He’s one of my main sponsors of my (Yamaha) R6 for this year’s Daytona 200, and he’s helping me at Road Atlanta in Stock 1000 and Superbike. Also, along with Disrupt Racing and CCFOfficeSolutions.com, I’d like to mention my third sponsor, which is North East Cycle Outlet Racing. They are the title sponsor for (Supersport rider) Benjamin Smith, and they really helped me out with making this deal happen for Road Atlanta.”

May, who is now a full-time mortgage banker, will compete in a total of four races at the Georgia track, including two Stock 1000 races and two Superbike races. When we asked him about the busy schedule, he said, “We used to do that all the time in the early 2000s. It was normal to run four races, sometimes five, on two different bikes and sometimes even three different bikes. I’m a little bit older now, and it’s going to be hot, but this is my local track, so I’ll be alright.”
