
Before capturing three AMA Superbike titles, racing in Europe’s Grand Prix paddock, and entering the AMA Hall of Fame, a young Salinas, California racer chased a single goal.
He wanted to win dirt track races.
Doug Chandler grew up in an era when America’s toughest motorcycle racers learned their craft sideways. On miles, half-miles, short tracks and TTs, riders developed throttle control, racecraft and a toughness that could not be taught in a classroom.
For Chandler, flat track was never supposed to be a steppingstone. It was the destination.

As a teenager and young professional, he chased the dream of becoming an AMA Grand National Champion, battling some of the best dirt trackers in the country. Road racing entered the picture almost by accident. At the time, points earned in road races counted toward the overall AMA Grand National Championship, and manufacturers encouraged their dirt track riders to compete wherever they could gain an advantage.
What began as an opportunity quickly became something more.
Chandler discovered he was remarkably fast on the pavement. Soon, he built a reputation as one of the most versatile racers in the country, capable of winning on nearly anything with two wheels. His combination of dirt-track instincts and road-racing precision made him a threat everywhere he competed, especially in wet conditions.
Eventually, he accomplished something only a handful of riders in history have achieved.
Chandler became an AMA Grand Slam winner in 1989, earning victories in every form of professional dirt track competition—mile, half-mile, short track, and TT—while also winning at the national level in road racing. It remains one of the rarest achievements in American motorcycle racing, matched by only three other riders before him: Dick Mann, “King” Kenny Roberts, and Bubba Shobert.
Riding the Team Muzzy Kawasaki ZX-7RR, Chandler transitioned from an accomplished all-around racer into one of the premier Superbike riders of his generation. In 1990, he captured his first AMA Superbike Championship aboard Muzzy’s mean green machine.

But the flat tracker turned road racer was never content standing still.
When presented with a choice between remaining in Superbikes or racing in the 500cc Grand Prix World Championship, “Dougie” chose the challenge of competing against the best riders in the world.
From 1991-1994, the young racer from the farming community of Salinas, California represented the United States on the world stage, competing against the sport’s elite and earning podium finishes while riding some of the most demanding motorcycles ever built. His flat-track background, throttle control and adaptability allowed him to succeed in an era when 500cc Grand Prix machines rewarded bravery and punished mistakes.
When his time in Europe ended, the then 29-year-old Californian returned home with unfinished business.

Back in AMA Superbike competition, he reunited with Kawasaki and once again found championship form. Known for a riding style as smooth as glass, Chandler focused on precision and tire preservation, a strategy that led him to two more AMA Superbike Championships in 1996 and 1997.
DC-10 understood that championships were won by more than talent alone. He became known as a rider who could develop motorcycles, conserve tires and think his way through races as effectively as he could charge to the front of the field. While others relied on raw speed, Chandler often gained his advantage through preparation, technical understanding and race-long strategy.
Those qualities continued long after his riding career wound down.

As the MotoAmerica era began, he remained deeply involved in the sport, serving as both rider representative and race director. He helped shape the championship from the inside, lending decades of experience to the next generation of riders and teams.
After stepping away from the sport in 2009, Chandler and his wife Sherry opened a bicycle sales and service shop named DC-10 Doug Chandler Performance in their hometown of Salinas, California.
Doug “Sneaky Fast” Chandler returned to the MotoAmerica paddock this year with his new DCR/Motion Pro team, fielding young rider Colton Shafer in the MotoAmerica Talent Cup class. The venture marks a new chapter for Chandler, who is shifting from a sport steward and mentor to a team owner. In his new role, he continues to pass on the technical insight and racecraft that defined his own racing career.
The 15-year-old Shafer bears similarities to Chandler as one of flat track’s most promising young talents, having already claimed five AMA Flat Track Grand Championship titles in his young career.

Chandler’s story is a near fable of an American who chased the world’s best and proved he belonged among them.
