“Records are made to be broken.”
How mny times have you heard that old saying before? It’s a phrase that was probably coined slightly after the wheel itself was invented. One early hominin, who lived millions of years ago—Australopithecus or someone like that—said it, or more than likely grunted it, to his rival who was going around acting like he was the fastest Neanderthal in all the land.
But, I digress.
At MotoAmerica, just like in almost all forms of motorsport that take place on closed courses where successive circulations are accounted for, we pay attention to lap times and record the fastest of those times for posterity.
During this past season, the 11th in MotoAmerica’s existence, a grand total of 62 new lap records were set.
Rule 1.18.4 of the Regulations for the MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North American Road Racing Championship states the following:
Lap Times
All laps for all sessions will be timed. A new class lap record for a circuit can be established by a rider in any official session, including practices, qualifying, races, and warm up. A new class race lap record for a circuit can only be established by a rider during a race. For all sessions, the lap time is the subtraction of the time between two consecutive crossings of the plane of the finish line indicated by the line painted on the track.
Per the above rule, we record overall lap records and also race lap records, which are fastest laps during actual races. Sometimes, overall lap records are set during races, in which case, they count as both lap records and race lap records.

King Of The Baggers
In the short, yet storied, history of the King Of The Baggers Championship, new lap records at each of the tracks where they compete have been set in virtually every session and virtually every year. As the class rapidly develops, the Baggers have just kept getting faster and faster. This year, however, we witnessed a slight tailing off of new records set. A total of 11 new overall and race lap records were added to the record books in 2025, which is certainly a lot, but we are now starting to see maturation in the class. In terms of pure physics alone, you can only go so fast, of course.

Superbike
We definitely noticed this trend in our premier Superbike class. Only two new lap records were set this past season, and they occurred in September and during the final two rounds of the season. At Circuit of The Americas, Tytlers Cycle Racing’s Cameron Beaubier did a lap of 2:07.497 aboard his BMW M 1000 RR during Sunday afternoon’s race two, which set a new Superbike race lap record at the Texas track.
At New Jersey Motorsports Park for the final round of the 2025 Superbike Championship, Attack Performance Progressive Yamaha Racing’s Bobby Fong set a new overall lap record of 1:19.716 aboard his Yamaha YZF-R1 and during Saturday morning’s Qualifying 2 session.
Supersport
OK, now we’re talking lap times. MotoAmerica’s middleweight maulers had an incredible season. A whopping 16 new lap records were set at nine of the 10 tracks on the MotoAmerica schedule. And, of those 16 new lap records, 10 of them were set by just one rider. In fact, that one rider set the most new lap records of anyone who competed in the MotoAmerica series in 2025.
Strack Racing Yamaha’s Mathew Scholtz defended his Supersport Championship in epic fashion. He went back to back in Supersport titles and won 11 out of the 18 races on the season, including five consecutive race wins to close out his 2025 Supersport campaign. He has now amassed 19 total Supersport race wins in his MotoAmerica career (all achieved in just the past two seasons), and his all-time, all-classes wins total is now 38. That ranks him eighth overall in all-time, all-classes wins among active riders.
Scholtz’s 10 new lap records don’t even tell the whole story, either. The South African rider known as “die leeu” (which is Afrikaans for “the lion”) repeatedly broke his own lap records in successive sessions. For exmple, at the season-ending round at New Jersey Motorsports Park, Scholtz broke the track record three times over that weekend.
